Accoya starts life as a fast-growing pine tree (Pinus radiata) grown in managed forests. The pine tree is harvested once it reaches maturity at around the 30 year mark. The raw timber undergoes a patented modification process using non-toxic vinegar.
This acetylation process alters the wood’s cell structure. This modification reduces the wood’s ability to absorb water in the cell walls by about 80%, greatly improving dimensional stability.
The change in cell walls means that insects and fungi do not recognise Accoya wood as a food source and therefore do not attack.
Accoya wood is Class 1 durable and surpasses even the most durable old growth tropical hardwoods such as teak, making it the perfect choice for inground applications such as fence posts.
While Thermowood forms the face of our fencing, the strength of any fence begins below. Posts and gravel boards sit closest to the ground, where moisture levels are highest and decay is most likely. For these structural components, we use Accoya.
It is a high performance, modified timber created through a process called acetylation, which enhances the wood’s durability and stability without introducing harmful chemicals. The result is a timber that performs exceptionally well in ground contact and demanding outdoor conditions, providing a solid and long lasting foundation for every Taiga fence.
Accoya is highly resistant to rot and decay, even in ground contact, making it ideal for fence posts and gravel boards where exposure to moisture is constant.
The modification process significantly reduces swelling and shrinkage, helping posts remain straight and secure over time.
Made from fast growing, certified timber and enhanced without toxic preservatives, Accoya offers a durable solution with strong environmental credentials.
Accoya is known for its impressive lifespan outdoors, reducing the likelihood of early post failure and costly replacements.

Yes, Accoya is particularly well suited to fence posts. Posts sit in or near the ground, where moisture levels are highest and decay is most likely. Accoya’s enhanced resistance to rot and swelling makes it an excellent choice for structural components that need to remain stable and secure for many years.
Accoya is known for its long service life, including in ground contact applications. When properly installed, Accoya posts can last for decades, significantly reducing the risk of early failure compared to standard treated softwood posts.
Pressure treated timber relies on chemical preservatives to resist decay, but it can still move, crack or fail over time. Accoya achieves durability through modification of the wood itself, resulting in superior dimensional stability and reduced swelling or shrinking. For long term structural reliability, Accoya is generally a higher performing option.
Accoya does not require chemical treatment for durability. Like all timber, it can weather to a silver-grey over time if left untreated. Surface finishes can be applied if a particular appearance is desired, but its structural performance does not depend on coatings.
Yes. Accoya is made from fast growing, sustainably sourced timber and modified without harmful preservatives. The process improves durability while maintaining strong environmental credentials, making it a responsible choice for long life outdoor applications such as fencing.
